Vietnam grows cacao. Most people who live here have never tasted it as a drink, because almost all of it is sold as beans and leaves the country.
Heyday is built on that. The beans are Trinitario, grown in Vietnam, and they are ground for a full day before anything is made with them. Long grinding is what takes the roughness out, and it is the difference between cacao that tastes like a bar of chocolate and cacao that tastes like a fruit.
Order it hot and it comes in a small cup, thick, with chocolate shaved over the top. Order it cold and it comes tall over ice, sweeter and easier, which is what most people want at two in the afternoon in this city.
The shelves along the wall are the other half of the shop. Bags of pure cacao powder to take home, and a wall painted with a woman carrying cacao pods, which is who actually grows it.
On Tran Bach Dang in An Hai, open from half past seven in the morning until half past ten at night.

Small cup, thick, chocolate shaved on top. This is the one to order first, because it is the one that tastes least like anything else.

Tall, over ice, with a foam top. Sweeter and easier than the hot one, and the right order for a hot afternoon.

Bags to take home, ground the same way as the drinks. The wall of them is most of the shop.

Trinitario, grown in Vietnam, ground for twenty four hours before anything is made from it.
