A change is on the way. On 29 June 2026 the city council voted to turn ten communes into wards: Hòa Vang, Hòa Tiến, Bà Nà, Đại Lộc, Điện Bàn Tây, Chiên Đàn, Núi Thành, Tam Anh, Nam Phước and Thăng Bình. More than 99 percent of households in those communes agreed.
When the central government approves, Da Nang will have 33 wards, 60 communes and one special zone. On 20 October 2026 that approval was still to come.
