That week
in Da Nang.

The tropical depression we wrote about last week came ashore in Quang Tri province on the afternoon of Sunday 13 September, well north of Da Nang.

It was still a depression, not a storm, and the national weather service expected it to weaken over Laos by Monday morning. Quang Tri and Hue got the heavy rain, more than 350 millimetres in some places.

For Da Nang, the national weather service forecast updated on Wednesday 16 September says this. Thursday 17 is cloudy with no rain, high 32 degrees, low 26. Friday 18, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 each have showers and thunderstorms, high 32, low 25.

Monday 21 still has showers, then Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 are cloudy with no rain and highs of 33.

Thunderstorms can bring lightning and strong wind. If you hear thunder at the beach, get out of the water and off the sand.

We checked this forecast on Wednesday 16 September, one day before you read it, and the weather here changes fast in the storm season, which lasts until November. Check again on the morning you go out, at nchmf.gov.vn.

When we checked, the weather service had no storm or tropical depression in its warnings. Its live warnings were for floods and landslides in other parts of the country, none for Da Nang.

Also on Saturday, JAPONISM, a Japanese music and party series touring Vietnam, plays Maia Beach Bar in the afternoon.

The same night it moves to the second floor of Gatosano, 63 Ngo Thi Si, from 10pm, with artists from Japan and Vietnam. Entry is 100,000 dong on Ticketmelon, or 150,000 at the door.

For families, the children's play Cuoc Phieu Luu Ky Thu is on at Cau Vong Theatre, 02 Vu Van Dung, at 7pm. It is in Vietnamese, and tickets are on Ticketbox.

All three nights: the Dragon Bridge breathes fire and then sprays water at nine, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It is free, and either riverbank works.

Every day from Friday to Sunday has thunderstorms in the forecast. Look at the venue's page before you leave home, most of all for the beach party.

The full moon of Mid-Autumn falls on Friday 25 September.

Hoi An runs its Mid-Autumn programme from Wednesday 23 to Saturday 26 September, across Hoi An, Hoi An Dong and Hoi An Tay wards. Four nights of lanterns in the old town, and the dates come from the city tourism board.

The closer it gets to the 25th, the harder that walk gets. If you want the old town without the crush, go on the Wednesday.

Friday 2 October, six in the evening until eleven, at Furama Resort on the beach road.

The German Business Association runs it, and it is the real thing: German beer, live music and food, on the resort's own grounds. The date, the time and the venue come from the organiser's own event page.

It is two weeks tomorrow, which is enough time to get a table together.

If you cross the river at busy times, this is about you. On 11 September the city's Department of Construction asked city leaders to let it study a new bridge over the Han River, with the aim of starting work before 2030.

The reason is traffic. Most trips in the centre go east or west, over five main bridges: Thuan Phuoc, Song Han, the Dragon Bridge, Tran Thi Ly and Tien Son.

The roads onto the Song Han, Dragon and Tran Thi Ly bridges are the most jammed, because they are the shortest way across.

The department also wants to study roads raised above the city on three possible routes, in place of an older idea for a tunnel under the airport. None of this is decided. There is no place for the bridge, no cost and no start date yet.

It is a request to study it, nothing more for now.

Da Nang launched a photo contest called Global Eyes on Da Nang at APEC Park on 10 September. Anyone can enter, Vietnamese or foreign, of any age, professional or not. That includes people who live, study or work in Vietnam.

The four themes are heritage and nature, daily life in the city, cultural exchange, and Da Nang as a good place to live. Email your photos to danang.protocol@gmail.com with your personal details, a title and a short description, by 20 October.

The rules published in August allow up to 15 photos per person, taken with a camera, phone or drone, and no images made with AI.

The best photos will go into an exhibition and a photo book called Da Nang, Telling the World. The awards are planned for late November.

If you work in tech, or want to, this is about your next job. The city's Department of Science and Technology is collecting comments on a draft plan to pay part of the cost of chip projects, AI data centres and chip design firms that set up in Da Nang.

Tuoi Tre reported the draft on 14 September and VnExpress on 16 September.

Under the draft, the city would pay up to 20 percent of the building cost, to a limit of 50 billion dong for a chip project and 30 billion for an AI data centre.

It would also pay up to 20 percent of the cost of new machines, to a limit of 200 billion for a chip project and 70 billion for a data centre. A chip project must invest at least 1,000 billion dong and a data centre at least 500 billion.

Chip design firms would get half of the cost of training Vietnamese staff, up to 500 million dong a year. VnExpress puts the total at 879 billion dong over five years.

None of this is law yet. It is a draft for the city council, and the money is paid only after a project is finished and its costs are checked by independent accountants. What it shows is the kind of employer the city wants to bring here in the next few years.
