Chi Lang: The Da Nang Stadium Name That Moved

On Saturday 17 October 2026 at 6pm, SHB Da Nang play Hai Phong at Chi Lang Stadium. Until December 2025 the ground was called Hoa Xuan.

Ask for Chi Lang Stadium in Da Nang today and you can be sent to two places. One is a football ground with 20,000 seats in Hoa Xuan ward. The other is a block of land between four streets in Hai Chau ward, in the middle of the city.

The second one is the original. For decades, Chi Lang Stadium was the home of Da Nang football, with about 28,000 seats, between Le Duan, Hung Vuong, Ngo Gia Tu and Chi Lang streets.

In October 2010 the city agreed to sell the whole ground to a private company, Thien Thanh Group, for a project of shops and offices. The land changed hands in January 2011 for nearly 1,400 billion dong.

In 2014 the company's chairman was arrested, and the land became part of a court case. Nothing was built. The stadium stood empty for more than ten years.

The city needed a new ground. From 2013 it built one in Hoa Xuan and opened it in 2016, with 20,000 seats. It is the largest stadium in Vietnam built only for football. Everyone called it Hoa Xuan Stadium.

At meetings with the city council, many people had asked to keep the old Chi Lang as a place for sport and culture. In December 2025 the council passed Resolution 49/2025 and gave the Hoa Xuan ground the official name Chi Lang Stadium.

City officials said the aim was to keep the symbol of Da Nang football alive.

The first match under the new name was on 28 February 2026. Da Nang beat PVF-CAND 3-0, their first league win in five months. On 7 June 2026, the last day of the season, they beat Thanh Hoa 4-0 at Chi Lang and stayed in V.League.

The old ground had a different year. In late May 2026, machines began knocking down its stands, so the land could be sold to pay debts from the court case. The first public sale, on 6 May 2026, started at 9,706 billion dong and found no buyer.

By 21 September 2026 there had been four sales and nobody had paid the deposit to bid. A fifth was set for 30 September, starting at 8,820 billion dong.

So this Saturday at 6pm, Chi Lang Stadium is in Hoa Xuan ward, and the name is older than the ground. The old Chi Lang is the block between Le Duan, Hung Vuong, Ngo Gia Tu and Chi Lang streets in Hai Chau ward. Its stands came down in 2026.
