Week one, if you know nobody

Here is the good news, and it is genuinely how it works here. You do not need a strategy. You need to be in the right few streets.

Da Nang is not a city where you have to hunt for people. Everyone who came here from somewhere else is already gathered in one small area, doing exactly what you are doing.

Go to the beach by An Thượng

This is the answer. That stretch of beach and the streets behind it are where people actually are, all day and every evening. Sitting, swimming, eating, working from cafes, drinking in the evening. Walk those streets. Eat there. Sit down somewhere and stay a while rather than passing through.

It is close to impossible to spend a week doing that and not meet anybody. The problem newcomers have is almost never that people here are unfriendly. It is that they spent their first fortnight somewhere quiet on the wrong side of town, wondering where everyone was.

Go back to the same place

Once is a transaction. Three times is a face they know. Pick one cafe and one place to eat and become a regular in your first week. That is how it starts here, and it costs nothing.

Do a thing, do not attend a networking event

The reliable way to meet people anywhere is to turn up regularly to something with a purpose. Not to walk into a room and try to be interesting. A gym, a board game night, a pottery class, yoga, pickleball, a surf school. Pick one and go weekly. You will know people within a month without ever having tried to.

Get into the groups

Most of what happens socially here is organised on Facebook events and in WhatsApp groups. Runs, football, dinners, day trips. That is where the invitations live. Eventbrite and Meetup are close to empty in Vietnam, so do not waste time there.

The mistake

The mistake is waiting.

People arrive and take a quiet apartment somewhere sensible. They tell themselves they will sort out a social life once they have unpacked, found a routine and done some work. Then week six arrives, they have spoken to nobody, and they decide the city is unfriendly.

The city is not unfriendly. They just never went down to the beach.
